Part-time Educational Advocate

​

MI-UCP is seeking an Educational Advocate to provide advocacy and support for families navigating special education services and disability-related issues in Oakland County, Michigan. This role involves offering information, referrals, and direct advocacy to ensure that students with disabilities receive appropriate educational services.

The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of special education law, as well as a strong understanding of legal, financial entitlement programs, and community-based mental health services. The position requires a flexible schedule to attend special education meetings in local schools and provide advocacy in various school settings.

Hours must be flexible 15 to 20 per week per school hours.

Key Responsibilities:

Special Education Advocacy:

  • Provide expert guidance and advocacy for families on issues related to special education, ensuring compliance with federal and state education laws. Act as a liaison at school meetings and advocate for services such as inclusion, mainstreaming, and center-based programs.

Family Support and Counseling:

  • Offer advice on how to navigate the special education system, including referrals to appropriate resources and services. Attend Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings and provide support to parents and caregivers.

Collaboration with Michigan Alliance for Families (M.A.F.):

  • Actively participate in M.A.F. activities and attend training to stay current on best practices and legal developments in special education.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Submit timely quarterly reports to Michigan United Cerebral Palsy and Michigan Alliance for Families to document advocacy efforts and progress.

Professional Development:

  • Maintain a high level of expertise in special education law and attend mandatory Michigan Alliance Advocates training. Twice a year.

Required Qualifications:

Expertise in Special Education Law:

  • A strong academic background and comprehensive knowledge of special education law and the rights of children with disabilities.

Advocacy Experience:

  • Demonstrated ability to independently advocate for children with disabilities in school settings, including attending IEP and other related meetings.

Flexible Schedule:

  • Ability to accommodate a variable schedule, including attending meetings in Oakland County.

Strong Communication Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, concise reports.
